Carolivia Herron, a scholar of Comparative Literature and African American Studies, has done extensive work in the field of comparative epic. Her most recent scholarly work, “An Introduction to African American Epic Tradition” (Rooms, 2010), develops an aesthetic code for African American epic using the poetry of Langston Hughes as a foundation. A Project Humanities Distinguished Scholar at Arizona State University, she is best known as the author of Nappy Hair (Random House, 1997), which caused a major national controversy and became a banned book 1998.
